Houston mayor urges evacuations as Hurricane Rita moves closer to shore

Thursday, September 22, 2005

Traffic is bumper to bumper on Houston interstate highways as citizens try to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Rita. Houston Mayor Bill White urged citizens in low areas of the city to “begin making their evacuation plans” in preparation for what is currently the 3rd strongest hurricane to ever form in the Atlantic Ocean and the worst to enter the Gulf of Mexico.

Acting U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) director David Paulison was quoted saying “I strongly, strongly urge Gulf Coast residents to pay close attention to this storm. It’s already a Category 4, a huge storm, it’s in warm waters and there’s a potential for it to increase more,” at a briefing in Washington DC. The storm was upgraded to a category 5 hurricane on Thursday, the strongest category of storm. Recently, Rita has lost intensity since entering cooler waters and facing wind shear from an opposing weather front, and is now a Category 4 storm.

Houston, Texas lies 50 feet above sea-level on average, but the area is still prone to flooding as the region is very flat and supported by multiple bayous. In 2001, following Tropical Storm Allison, large areas of Houston remained flooded after receiving 10 inches (250 mm) of rain, causing over $US 5 billion in damage. Meteorologists fear that Rita could cause similar, if not worse damage.

Located 50 miles away from the inland city of Houston, and situated on the Gulf’s coastline, lies Galveston, Texas at a mere 8 feet above sea level. The island city, with a population of nearly 60,000, built a 10-mile-long, 17-foot-high solid granite barrier next to the sea as a defense against hurricanes.

The National Hurricane Center currently predicts a storm surge from Rita in the 15 to 20 feet range, along with strong battering waves. The city manager of Galveston, Steve LeBlanc said, “Galveston is going to suffer. And we are going to need to get it back in order as quickly as possible. I would say that we probably have 90 percent of our residents have left the island. It feels like a ghost town to me, and that’s a good thing.”

Rita is expected to slow down and linger after making landfall in the region. That could possibly mean even more damage from heavy rainfall accumulations. The governor of Louisiana, Kathleen Blanco, said the rain is a threat to New Orleans. Anywhere from 2 to 4 inches of rainfall are expected there, when earlier predictions estimated that 3 inches of rainfall would be enough to cause more flooding in the city.

Billy West, voice of Ren and Stimpy, Futurama, on the rough start that shaped his life

Ren and Stimpy. Bugs Bunny. Philip J. Fry and Professor Hubert Farnsworth on Futurama. Sparx. Bi-Polar Bear. Popeye the Sailor Man. Woody Woodpecker. You may not think you have ever heard Billy West, but chances are on a television program, a movie, a commercial, or as Howard Stern’s voice guru in the 1990’s, you have heard him. West’s talent for creating personalities by twisting his voice has made him one of a handful of voice actors—Hank Azaria and the late Mel Blanc come to mind—who have achieved celebrity for their talent. Indeed, West is one of the few voice actors who can impersonate Blanc in his prime, including characterizations of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and other characters from Warner Bros. cartoons.

What is the fulcrum in Mr. West’s life that led him to realize a talent to shape personalities with his voice, and how did the discovery of that gift shape him? Wikinews reporter David Shankbone found that like many great comedians, West faced more sour early in life than he did sweet. The sour came from a physically and emotionally abusive alcoholic father (“I could tell you the kind of night I was going to have from the sound of the key in the door or the way the car pulled up.”), to his own problems with drug and alcohol use (“There is a point that you can reach in your life where you don’t want to live, but you haven’t made the decision to die.”).

I’m telling you stuff that I never said to anybody…

If sin, suffering and redemption feel like the stages of an endless cycle of American existence, West’s own redemption from his brutalized childhood is what helped shape his gift. He performed little bits to cheer up his cowed mother, ravaged by the fact she could not stop her husband’s abuse of young West. “I was the whipping boy and she would just be reduced to tears a lot of times, and I would come in and say stuff, and I would put out little bits just to pull her out of it.”

But West has also enjoyed the sweet. His career blossomed as his talent for creating entire histories behind fictional characters and creatures simply by exploring nuance in his voice landed him at the top of his craft. You may never again be able to forget that behind the voice of your favorite character, there is often an extraordinary life.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with renowned voice actor Billy West, who for the first time publicly talks about the horrors he faced in his childhood; his misguided search for answers in anger, drugs and alcohol; and the peace he has achieved as one of America’s most recognizable voice actors.

Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

Thursday, February 24, 2005

A paste containing synthetic tooth enamel can seal small cavities without drilling. Kazue Yamagishi and colleagues at the FAP Dental Institute in Tokyo say that the paste can repair small cavities in 15 minutes.

Currently, fillers don’t stick to such small cavities so dentists must drill bigger holes. Hydroxyapatite crystals, of which natural enamel is made, bond with teeth to repair tiny areas of damage.

Yamagishi and colleagues have tested their paste on a lower premolar tooth that showed early signs of decay. They found that the synthetic enamel merged with the natural enamel. The synthetic enamel also appears to make teeth stronger which will improve resistance to future decay. As with drilling, however, there is still the potential for pain: The paste is strongly acidic to encourage crystal growth and causes inflammation if it touches the gums.

The paste is reported in the journal Nature.

English court jails policeman over insurance fraud

Thursday, July 1, 2010

A court in England, UK has jailed a policeman for ten months after he was convicted of defrauding his car insurance company.

Police Constable Simon Hood, 43, arranged for a friend who dealt in scrap metal to dispose of his Audi TT, then claimed it had been stolen.

Hood had been disappointed with the car’s value when he tried to sell it two years after its purchase in 2008. He arranged for friend Peter Marsh, 41, to drive the vehicle to his scrapyard in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Marsh then dismantled the vehicle with the intent of disposing of it, but parts were later found wrapped in bubblewrap at Ace Tyre and Exhaust Centre.

Marsh picked up the TT from outside nearby Gorleston police station. Records show mobile phone conversations between the conspirators that day in March, both before and after the vehicle was reported stolen. The pair denied wrongdoing but were convicted of conspiring to commit insurance fraud after trial.

The fraud was uncovered after Hood told former girlfriend Suzanne Coates of the scheme. It was alleged before Norwich Crown Court that he had confessed to her in an effort to resume their relationship. Coates said that after the pseudotheft, Hood told her “he didn’t want to look for it. He said it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, which I thought was a bit strange.”

You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison

Shortly afterwards Hood suggested they should become a couple once more, she said; she challenged his version of events regarding the car: “He said he did it but I couldn’t tell anyone. He said he did it with Peter. Peter had a key and took the car away and it was going to be taken to bits and got rid of so it was never found.”

Hood was defended by Michael Clare and Marsh by Richard Potts. Both lawyers told the court that their clients had already suffered as a result of the action in mitigation before sentencing. Clare said Hood had resigned from the police after fifteen years of otherwise good service and risked losing his pension. “It is not a case where his position as a police officer was used in order to facilitate the fraud,” he pointed out. “His career is in ruins.” Hood is now pursuing a career in plumbing.

Potts defended Marsh by saying that he, too, had already suffered from his actions. His own insurers are refusing to renew their contract with him when it expires and his bank withdrew its overdraft facility. His business employs 21 people and Potts cited Marsh’s sponsorship of Great Yarmouth In Bloom as amongst evidence he supported his local community.

Judge Alasdair Darroch told Marsh that he did accept the man was attempting to help his friend. He sentenced Marsh to six months imprisonment, suspended for two years and ordered to carry out 250 hours of community service. He was more critical of Hood:

“As a police officer you know the highest possible standards are demanded by the public. You have let down the force. You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison.”

How To Maintain Natural Beauty Through Skin Care}

Submitted by: Kath Torres

These days maintaining the body’s natural beauty is synonymous with taking good care of one’s skin. Looking and feeling beautiful involves much more than this, of course. However, one way to keep the youthful looks and feel great has to do with taking adequate care of the needs of the skin. Here are a few tips on how to go about keeping an eye on this part of the physique and never lose the appeal of a healthy and admirable glow.

The first bit of advice is about the fact that caring for the epidermis is not just about applying the appropriate natural creams and home-based remedies. It actually demands that a person adopts a lifestyle that’s geared towards healthy living. Without the latter no amount of dermatological intervention to obtain or keep a youthful outer appearance is going to be effective.

It’s therefor necessary to watch what one eats. A person’s dietary habits are as important as the type of products used to maintain a good-looking skin. The way to looking healthier on the outside entails eating a regular, balanced meal that’s low in sugar content and bad fat, contains enough calcium, vegetables, fruits and includes lots of water.

Keeping as physically active as possible is a superb way to improve the well-being of one’s body and mind as well. Regular exercise does wonders for the skin. It stimulates the blood flow which is good for feeding the epidermis. It goes without saying that such exercise has to be complemented by getting enough sleep as well.

Sleep is important because then the body rejuvenates itself. Folk having regular late nights show the unsightly effects of these on the face and around the eyes especially. No amount of facial cream application can replace the value of getting enough rest on a regular basis when it comes to caring for the body’s appearance.

Protecting oneself against the effects of the natural environment whenever possible is another way to prolong the youthfulness. Staying out unprotected in direct sunlight for long hours is not only damaging to the skin but also bad for a person’s health. Always wear appropriate clothing when outside to shield the physique against the weather, and apply the necessary creams on parts of the epidermis exposed to the wind or sunlight. Wind, heat, even air-conditioning can dry out the skin while toxic substances in the air can settle on the epidermis.

Aside from getting enough sleep, try and find ways to deal better with the stresses of daily life. Exercise is of course great for this, but it also depends on one’s attitude and beliefs about others and the self. People that are prone to outbursts of anger for instance age faster than folk with a generally calm and easy-going demeanor. In short, eliminating anxiety and stress from one’s life is a vital part of taking care of the body and keeping it healthy and beautiful.

So maintaining one’s natural beauty is not just about diligently applying whatever skin care products are out there. It’s about changing one’s lifestyle and mindset as well. Anyone taking note of the above suggestions and applying these will find the results effective and lasting.

P&G to acquire Gillette for US$57 billion

Friday, January 28, 2005

New York –American manufacturing giant Proctor & Gamble (P&G) plans to acquire Gillette Co. for US$57 billion in stock. The purchase plan calls for P&G to swap 0.975 shares of its stock per share of Gillete Co. P&G also announced a stock buyback program in which they would purchase up to US$22 billion of shares over the next 18 months. Including the stock buyback program, the merger is being financed by 60 percent stock and 40 percent cash.

P&G is known for brands such as Ariel and Tide washing powder, Max Factor cosmetics, Pringles potato crisps (chips) and Hugo Boss and Lacoste perfumes.

Gillette, known for brands such as Gillette razors, Oral B dental care, and Duracell batteries, has had growing problems with the growth of private labels and price cuts demanded by large supermarkets.

After the acquisition is completed, Gillette’s CEO James Kilts will be P&G’s vice-chairman. Kilts said that he expects that this acquisition will cause additional mergers to take place.

“I believe the consumer product industry needs to consolidate,” said Kilts, “we believe we can bring these companies together and create a juggernaut.”

P&G and Gillette have a combined market capitalization of about $185 billion US, which will make it the largest in the sector.

The early morning announcement states that 6,000 employees will be eliminated. Most of the layoffs will result from reducing overlapping management positions and other supporting positions within the combined company.

Antitrust regulators in the US and Europe plan to review the acquisition, to determine whether the combined company will have too much power over pricing and shelf space.

P&G plans to provide additional details about the merger Friday morning (East Coast time) in New York.

Somali pirates hijack Indonesian tugboat and Turkish container ship

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Two more vessels have been hijacked in Somalia. Pirates have captured an Indonesian tugboat with a barge that was working for French oil firm Total and a Turkish container ship.

The Turkish vessel’s seizure was confirmed by a US Fifth Fleet spokesman. MV Bosphorus Prodigy is a 330 ft (100 m) container vessel flagged in Antigua and Barbuda. It is owned and operated by Isko Marine Company based in Istanbul.

The Fifth Fleet could not confirm the tugboat’s seizure, but an anonymous official with Total in Yemen could. He explained the boat and barge were headed to Malaysia from the Yemeni port of Mukalla. He said the crew consisted of both Indonesians and other nationalities, and that the vessels, which had been hired by a subcontractor, were not carrying any oil at the time.

The new hijackings came as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime asked for greater policing in the area by international bodies, and for the signing of agreements that allowed the arresting officer to take pirates back to the officer’s country for prosecution.

“Pirates cannot be keelhauled or forced to walk the plank, nor should they be dumped off the Somali coast,” said the office’s head Antonio Maria Costa. “They need to be brought to justice”.

Mexican police official, bodyguard shot dead at restaurant

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Gunmen today opened fire in a Mexico City restaurant, killing a top police official in charge of monitoring the country’s illegal drug trade, as well as one of his bodyguards, Mexican officials said. The attack is the latest waged against authorities attempting to fight Mexico’s powerful drug cartels.

Security officials in Mexico City say the attack occurred as Igor Labastida Calderón, commander of the federal police‘s Traffic and Contraband division, was eating lunch with one of his bodyguards, Jose Maria Ochoa. According to Minerva Amado, spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, two unknown subjects got out of a black vehicle, entered the restaurant, and opened fire on Labastida Calderón.

Reports differ on who else was injured in the attack. Amado said two other bodyguards were injured and hospitalized, while Mexico City newspaper El Universal reports that three civilians were injured.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. No arrests have been made so far, as police continue to search for the assailants. Federal police have refused to comment.

President Felipe Calderón has sent over 20,000 troops throughout Mexico in an attempt to take back areas controlled by the country’s drug cartels. Since Calderón took office in December 2006, more than 4,000 people have been killed by these drug cartels, allegedly including federal police chief Édgar Millán Gómez, whose May death was attributed to the Sinaloa Cartel.

The Importance Of Dissertation Writing In Uk}

Submitted by: Siena William

Dissertation holds an important place in the academic life of any UK student at the undergraduate or graduate level. The aim of any dissertation or thesis assignment is to create an authentic piece of research work. Such a piece should be prepared by UK students on a clearly defined topic.

Knowing a dissertation in detail

Usually, a dissertation is known to be the most significant piece of a students independent work during an undergraduate program. On the other hand, a thesis is generally linked to a Masters Degree. The terms thesis and dissertation are used interchangeably and vary depending upon universities and nations.

Such an assignment is tedious but not impossible for UK students to complete within a fixed deadline. Yet, some of the students find dissertation writing extremely daunting and prefer to avail professional assistance.

Here are some points that UK students should remember while dealing with a dissertation:

In spite of being the longest and toughest academic assignment, a dissertation can be immensely rewarding for the students. It carries a large portion of grade assessment thats crucial for a students course.

The UK students are allowed to opt for a topic of special interest and even work on their initiative during a dissertation, unlike an essay and numerous other assignments.

The students are required to garner a range of research and planning skills to write a dissertation assignment. Such skills can be of immense value to UK students in their future career and even in organizations, both present and potential employers.

The students should opt for a topic about which they already know something. Such a topic is preferred so that the students already have a reference framed for their literature research along with some interest and understanding within the theory behind the dissertation topic.

The students should remember that a dissertations question and topic need to be adequately focused so that they can gather all the required data in a relatively shorter time-frame thats generally around six weeks for undergraduate college programs.

There are many UK students who have to live a hectic academic life. Such students are extremely busy with other tasks like homework, assignments, projects etc. All such activities leave them with hardly any time to prepare their dissertation systematically. Such students prefer to avail services from dissertation writing experts to get their dissertation done flawlessly on time.

These experts dont just restrict themselves to writing when it comes to providing online dissertation help services. They even provide qualitative services related to dissertation editing and proofreading. Such professional writers are of expert level and are aware of all the nuances that go into the preparation of a dissertation assignment. They have written dissertation themselves as students during their Ph.D. days. Besides, they have even been preparing dissertation material and guides as professional writers over the past many years. All such experiences can enable the writers to provide top-notch dissertation solutions.

A dissertation holds immense importance in the lives of UK students even beyond their academic lives. It can act as a reference document that the students can present at their potential workplace.
