Australian Greens senator Bob Brown marks 10 years in Parliament

Thursday, March 2, 2006

As the Australian Prime Minister John Howard celebrated his ten-year reign this week, Greens Leader Bob Brown marked the 10th anniversary of his election into the Federal parliament.

Senator Brown has outlasted 10 other party leaders: Meg Lees, Cheryl Kernot, Natasha Stott-Despoja, Brian Greig, Andrew Bartlett, all former Democrat leaders. Pauline Hanson, Len Harris of the One Nation party, plus the Australian Labor Party’s Kim Beazley, Simon Crean and Mark Latham have all been and gone during that time.

Only Prime Minister John Howard and Senator Bob Brown are left standing as leaders in the Australian Federal Parliament. Bob Brown was elected to the Senate in 1996, and re-elected in 2001. He has introduced bills for constitutional reform, forest protection, to block radioactive waste dumping, to ban mandatory sentencing, and greenhouse abatement.

Senator Brown says his party has hardly been in the balance of power at any stage, yet the Australian Greens have risen in popularity. “We’ve become the third major political party in the country and we’re on our way to becoming a real power broker in this country and ultimately, the aim has to be becoming part of the Government of the country,” he told ABC Radio.

While there’s perpetual media speculation over John Howard’s possible retirement, Senator Brown says he’s full of beans and ready for the next 10 years. “And there’s no speculation about me standing at next year’s election. I can’t wait,” Senator Brown said. “Our election aim will be to rescue the Senate from the Howard government, and doubling our team is not beyond reality.”

The Tasmanian Greens senator predicts his party could govern the country one day. “We’re on our way to becoming a real powerbroker in this country and ultimately the aim has to be becoming part of the government of the country,” he said.

The Greens started with Brown’s entry into the Senate after the 1996 election, doubled to two senators in 2001, and has four had senators represented since 2004.

The four Greens senators and their staff say they will celebrate with a chocolate cake – and 10 green candles. The government held a gala fundraising dinner in the Great Hall of Parliament on Wednesday night to celebrate Mr Howard’s milestone.

Senator Brown said the success of Prime Minister John Howard is in his ability to play on fears. “(Howard)… is able to “dig a little bit below surface to play on fears that people have. He has presided over a country where the rich have got richer much faster than the poor have seen their conditions improve,” he said. “And it is a country that says if you are down on your luck, bad luck. The good Samaritan aspect which is very strong in this country, doesn’t reside with this government.”

Of the Federal Labor Party the Greens leader said they should move back to humanitarian politics He said Labor was trying to swing to the right but had lost its way. “I think the Opposition has lost its way and I think it is going to get worse,” Senator Brown said. “The indications are that the Opposition thinks if it moves to the right it will do better,” said Senator Brown.

Bob Brown is among 20 environmentalists, organisations and concerned citizens who were issued a 216 page writ by the Tasmanian-based timber company Gunns Limited in December 2004. The woodchipping giant is sueing for a combined AU$6.3 million for actions it claims has damaged their business and reputation. The defendants say the case is ‘industrial’ style litigation, alleging conspiracy, interference with trade and business and defamation. Nine different campaigns are cited.

Fee Only Financial Planner What Questions To Ask?

By Ryan Paulin

Hiring a financial professional to handle your financial affairs is a major decision that is not to be taken lightly. A lot of factors and considerations will affect in your choice. There are people who in fact choose fee-only financial planners to manage their assets and give investment guidance.

What is a Fee-Only Financial Planner? These are financial planners who charge a specialized fee only for financial planning services and these are paid directly by their clients. They do not receive any additional compensation or commission out of the services that they render.

One of the questions you should ask your fee-only financial planner is the length of time they have been in the business of financial planning. Experience and integrity is very important since the relationship created involves trust and confidence. Knowing the track record and proven competence of your fee-only financial planner is a must. It is also important to find someone who will put your interests ahead of their own so find someone without any conflict-of-interest with any company.

Academic and professional competence of a fee-only financial adviser is important since this will affect the outcome of his or her advice. This will also affect the quality of service that they will provide for you. Also, the more experienced the financial planner is the better since they will be less likely to be shaken by rough times and have more knowledge in fixing particular problems in the business.

The primary job of a fee-only financial planner is to come up with a long term investment strategy. He or she has to make sure that this plan will be properly implemented so the next question you have to ask is his or her qualification to get the job done. Inquire about his or her academic qualifications, credentials and licenses if there is any. Ask if they can handle pressure under good and bad economic times. Demand for a copy of their ADV Form II to see if they have been sanctioned in the past or given any disciplinary action in relation to their work.

Another important question is the mode of compensation they expect from you. How are they compensated? This is vital in determining whether or not you can afford their services or if you will be comfortable with the payment set-up. Fee-only financial planners are more likely to give you sound and impartial advice since they are paid regardless of your choice of investor. Those who are commissioned based may have a conflict of interest and may not give you the financial advice that you need.

You should also ask regarding the services the fee-only financial planner is willing to provide. Is he or she adept with tax laws and regulations? Can he or she provide complex advice involving various financial issues? As your wealth grows the management of your assets becomes more complicated. Finding someone who can multi-task might be a good option for you.

Ask also for licenses and certifications. Planners need to be registered in accordance with state and federal laws. Check out if your fee-only financial planner meets the qualifications set by your own state.

Daughter of Yuko Ikeda kidnapped to ransom in Tokyo; freed 13 hours later

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Ikeda Kanako, a 21-year-old senior student of the Meiji Gakuin University and the first daughter of celebrity surgeon Yuko Ikeda, was kidnapped at about 1225 (UTC+9), June 26, 2006, in Shibuya, Tokyo.

A bullet was fired and one officer slightly cut when police stormed a Kawasaki apartment to rescue the girl.

Kanako was dressed in a white light half-sleeved cardigan, blue jeans with a bistre belt made of leather, a spring green camisole and carried a bag of Vuitton when she was abducted at a bus stop.

She was found unharmed 13 hours later by Japanese police at a condominium located in Nakahara-ku, Kawasaki, Kanagawa. The young woman’s make-up was not disordered; Kanako’s long brown fringe was not disheveled at all and she was wearing what she had been when she was kidnapped.

The kidnapping of Kanako was a big story in Japanese media in June, 2006. The story appeared in many newspapers as the front-page news on June 27, 2006.

Kanako and her kidnappers had been in touch with her mother using Kanako’s mobile phone. The effort to free her was helped greatly by a woman who witnessed the moment Kanako was taken; she wrote down the license plate of the van and other details.

Police traced mobile phone calls and were able to locate the van in Kawasaki where they detained two of the kidnappers as they went shopping.

One conspirator Li Yong, 29, from China, led the policemen to the apartment and tricked Kaneo Ito, 49, from Japan, to open the door. Ito managed to discharge one bullet before being restrained by an assistant police inspector, the first man in the room.

The other man involved in the kidnap of Kanako was Choi Gi Ho, 54, from South Korea. Kanato was freed unharmed.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrested three men on suspicion of conspiring to kidnap a woman and hold her to a reported 300 million yen ransom.

Buying Property In Costa Blanca Is Real Estate Paradise

Submitted by: Dale Campbell

When it comes to buying property, Costa Blanca is a fantastic location for property investment as it has a perfect combination of awe-inspiring natural beauty and a cultural legacy. Costa Blanca is well known for its resorts such as Benidorm and Elche, the palm tree capital of the world. Golf lovers flock to the area to enjoy year round golf thanks to a climate that provides over 300 sun filled days a year. Food connoisseurs enjoy meals that have been influenced by Costa Blanca s Moorish agricultural past and rice is a main ingredient in many dishes, which includes the famous paella. Many people enjoy a glass of fine wine produced in the area, to compliment their food.

Besides being one of the most beautiful and sought after destinations, Costa Blanca has many different types of properties that are suitable for most people s budget. Buying property in Costa Blanca is all about location, location, location. If you have a large budget, then properties along the seafront would be ideal as they tend to be more expensive then else where. Seafront properties are known as real estate paradise as they are sought after areas with holiday makers and the properties can bring in some healthy rental income for the entrepreneurial property investor. If you are looking for a property as a rental income, it is advisable to choose one that has some beautiful natural sights and is near attractions like a Water Park and an Animal Park. Being located near a shopping mall and public transport can also increase your asking price for rent, and add value to your property when it comes to reselling.

For some property investors the seaside properties are too expensive, so they are traveling inland where the property prices are easier on the pocket. This is proving to be a popular choice for people relocating to Spain as not only are property prices cheaper, but the way of life tends to more Spanish then places along the seafront that have had a heavy British influence for many years.

Once you ve decided you re going to buy a property, set a budget and stay with it.

In Costa Blanca property prices vary with the seasons. Therefore, when you are buying property in Costa Blanca consider the time of year as the off-peak season can provide you with property that is cheaper than at the height of the tourist season. Visit the property at least twice before you make a decision, and visit it at different times of the day. Talk to the neighbours about the area and listen carefully to what they say. Also check what amenities the property has, such as electricity, water and gas, so you don t have any surprises once you ve bought the property.

Having some knowledge of the property market in Costa Blanca is an important aspect to consider when buying property as the market is different than the UK. For example the buyer is liable for a transfer tax (IVA) and the rate is dependent on whether the property is a new build or a second-hand property. There are online service providers providing legal advice as well as up-to-date details of available real estate. Confirmation of the reputation and knowledge of the real estate consultant is a must to ensure reliable information about the property you want to buy. It is also important to have a legal advisor to check ownership of the property and any outstanding debts on the property before you sign any paperwork.

In conclusion, if you are looking for an overseas property investment, buying property in Costa Blanca has a lot to offer investors great weather, popular with tourists, rich with culture, and different types of properties to suit all budgets.

An autopsy performed on Tuesday revealed that the late Boyzone singer Stephen Gately “had died of natural causes”.

Officials from the Spanish island of Majorca that Stephen had suffered from an accumulation of fluid on the lungs, or as it is known in scientific terms, a pulmonary edema. The 33-year-old singer was found dead on a sofa in the lounge of his apartment. He had been out of the accommodation for the night while he was partying with Andrew Cowles, who was his partner.

There was a court hearing held earlier today in Majorca. The hearing only lasted for a short time. The judge had decided that the family of Stephen Gately would be allowed to take his body back to the Republic of Ireland, the country in which Gately grew up and had lived in, by plane. After discovering Stephen’s death, the other members of Boyzone took a plane flight to Majorca, so as to comfort Andrew Cowles. They have now flown back to their homes.

UN carries out first review of US human rights record

Saturday, March 19, 2011

The United Nations has completed its first ever assessment of the United States human rights record, which began last November. They made 228 recommendations for improvements. On Friday, the U.S. accepted about 174 of these, agreeing to such recommendations as the humane treatment of terror suspects and repudiation of torture, but rejected the recommendation to drop the death penalty.

The Legal Adviser of the Department of State, Harold Koh, listed nine core areas in which the U.S. agreed to make improvements, including civil rights, immigration, and the humane treatment of suspects held at Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Koh said President Obama agreed to push for ratification of conditions under the Geneva Conventions and to add protections for international armed conflict detainees. Koh refused to drop the death penalty as many European countries requested, arguing that it was legal under international law.

Some nations wanted the U.S. to reduce prison overcrowding, prevent racial profiling, and ratify international treaties protecting the rights of women and children. China and Russia wanted Guantanamo to be shut down. Cuba, Iran and Venezuela said the U.S. was ignoring too many recommendations.

The Obama administration joined the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council two years ago, allowing for increased international scrutiny. This is the first time the five-year-old council has reviewed the U.S. record of human rights. Nations are held accountable to make the improvements in the recommendations that they agree to.

In criticism of the U.S., the director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s human rights program, Jamil Dakwar, noted that the U.S., unlike 100 other countries, lacks an independent human rights monitoring commission.

Pakistan security forces airstrikes kill several Taliban militants

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Pakistan security forces attacked Taliban strongholds in northwest Pakistan yesterday. Aided by fighter jets and gunship helicopters they claim to have killed 21 Taliban militants in Kurram and Bajaur. The offensive targeted the remote town of Bajaur, along the Afghan border; this area has been frequently targeted to attack Islamic extremists.

Sources claim the first attack occurred in the Damdola, Sewai and Shago segments of Mamoond tehsil. The latter is a renowned Taliban stronghold located only about fifteen miles northeast of the town of Khar.

“Air strikes by the jet fighters continued for more than two hours. Ten militants have been killed and several hideouts were destroyed,” stated a Frontier Corps official in Khar.

Speaking for local authorities, Firamosh Khan confirmed the attack, “[i]t is true that several militants were killed.”

Bajaur was the location of anti-terrorist actions in late 2008; by February last year the army claimed to have secured the area. Despite this, conditions of the area have been tumultuous; air attacks are again frequent. Such attacks are part of an offensive against Taliban strongholds throughout northwest Pakistan, started last year.

The Pakistani government also sent approximately 30,000 troops, assisted by fighter planes, to fight Taliban extremists in South Waziristan in October. The army claims this attack has progressed, and they have attained some success.

Related to this, helicopter gunships shelled Salarzai, about twenty kilometers northwest of Khar. Pakistani security sources claimed this action resulted in the deaths of two militants.

In a separate incident, eleven suspected insurgents died when security forces, along with jets and helicopters, raided their hideouts. Official sources claimed four such hideouts were demolished.

In the past day, about 23 extremists have been captured by security forces. The arrests were made during search and raiding in multiple areas of Khyber Agency, say sources.

In a statement yesterday, NWFP Frontier Corps expressed hope that the situation at Kurram Agency had marginally improved. They added that the Thal-Parachinar Road is now partially open.

On Sunday, near Badama, explosives were detonated which injured two soldiers of the Pakistani army. One suspected militant was arrested by security in Bajaur Agency, on Saturday. Two other suspects were located in Dir district; they were handed over to Lal Qila police.
