Ireland votes to overturn 35-year-old constitutional ban on abortion

Sunday, May 27, 2018

In the official result of Friday’s Irish referendum over the legality of abortion, referendum officer Barry Ryan announced yesterday 66.4% of voters favoured overturning the eighth amendment of the constitution. Introduced in 1983, the eighth amendment made abortion constitutionally illegal. Irish Taoiseach — Prime Minister — Leo Varadkar said supporting legislation, to be framed following the result of this referendum, is to be “enacted before the end of this year”.

More than 2.1 million people voted on the referendum on Friday. With a 64.1% turnout, 1,429,981 voted in favour of eliminating the abortion ban while 723,632 voted to keep it. The results were announced at Dublin Castle. About 6000 voters spoiled their votes. Calling it “an historic day”, Prime Minister Varadkar said it was “a great act of democracy.” Ministers said they would form laws allowing medical termination of pregnancy in the first trimester, twelve weeks, of pregnancy, and under special cases until the 24th week. The legislation is to be formed after discussion with medical experts.

Since the amendment, Article 40.3.3 of the Irish constitution, in 1983, which gave an unborn child equal rights to life as the mother, hundreds of thousands of women traveled to different countries for the medical termination of pregnancy, while some used medical drugs illegal in Ireland to terminate the pregnancy.

“Savita Matters, Women Matter” was one of the slogans used by the supporters who wanted to repeal the amendment. In October 2012, a 31-year-old dentist of Indian origin, Savita Halappanavar, died from sepsis at a Galway hospital after she was denied abortion for a protracted miscarriage. She was told by a midwife that termination of pregnancy would not be possible since Ireland was a “Catholic country”. Halappanavar’s photo was used for posters by supporters who wanted the 35-year-old amendment repealed. In 2016, the current Roman Catholic Pope, Pope Francis, described abortion as a “very grave sin” and a “horrendous crime”.

Halappanavar’s father Andanappa Yalagi told Hindustan Times, “We’ve got justice for Savita. What happened to her will not happen to any other family. I have no words to express my gratitude to the people of Ireland at this historic moment.” 39 of 40 Irish constituencies voted in favour of repealing the law, while voters in only one constituency, Donegal, voted against — 51.87% opting to keep the anti-abortion laws. After the result was announced, the crowd were chanting Savita’s name in front of Dublin Castle.

Cora Sherlock, an anti-abortion activist, said, “what we voted on today is the ending of human life.” “I will accept the will of the Irish people, at the same time I will make it very clear what I feel of the campaign that has taken place. We will now regroup and find out what our next move is”, she added. Another activist, David Quinn, said, “The result today is basically a reversal of the 1983 result. On that occasion the defeated side did not simply slip away.”

“The people have said that we want a modern constitution for a modern country”, Prime Minister Varadkar said. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later congratulated Varadkar on Twitter, saying: “What a moment for democracy and women’s rights.”

London, England — Yesterday at London’s Basketball Arena, the Canada women’s national wheelchair basketball team earned their first victory of the London Paralympics when they defeated the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team 57–50.

Canada took a one point lead into the second half, when the scores were 33–32 because of a last minute foul that sent Canada to the free throw line where they capitalized by making one of their shots. 4.5 point player Janet McLachlan and 2 point player Katie Harnock dominated in minutes played for Canada during the first half, playing all 20 minutes and leading their team in scoring with 11 first half points for McLachlan and 12 for Harnock. The Canadian team was loudly supported by spectators, earning more cheering from the largely Great Britain supporting fans than the Australians.

The second half saw Canada slowly increase their lead, keeping tied with Australia 4–4 in the first half of third, 6–4 in the last half of the third, 6–4 in the first half of the fourth, and 8–6 in the last half of the fourth. McLachlan finished the game as Canada’s leading scorer with 28 total, 17 in the second half. Harnock had a quieter second half only scoring 2 points to finish with 14. Cindy Ouellett was the team’s third leading scorer, finishing the game with ten.

The Canadian team supported their team from the bench, chanting “Get it out! Get it out!” when on defense and “Let’s go Canada” when on the offense. Other times, one player led the team in chanting support for their players on the court. The team was consistently louder than the Australian bench.

Throughout the game, the Canadians tipped themselves over more in their chairs than the Australians. Ouellett tipped once, and bounced in her chair, with a wheel leaving the ground as she attempted to block shots and steal the ball. Ouellett and Australian Cobi Crispin locked wheels, and required a break in the game where Australia’s coach came on to the court and removed Ouellett’s wheel to detach the pair before putting it back on again.

Following the game, Australia’s Amber Merritt said of playing Canada, “I have the utmost respect for Canada. They’re a great team, but we’ll refocus on the game tomorrow [against the Netherlands] and go out and play like we know we can, the Australian way.”

Prior to the start of the game, McLachlan was the team’s dominating player in the competition. She was ranked eighth in the competition in field goal percentage, and was Canada’a highest ranked player in this category. She ranked second in the tournament in total field goals made per game, with 12. Teammate Katie Harnock ranked eighth. Tara Feser ranked fourth in the tournament for 2 point field goal percentage at 57.1%, while McLachlan ranked ninth with 50.0%. McLachlan was second in 2 point field goals made per game, at 12. Harnock was tied for first with Mexico’s Floralia Estrada Bernal in the competition for 3 point field goal percentage at 20%, and was ranked second in the tournament for most 3 point field goals made with one.

As a team coming into the game, Canada was ranked sixth in total field goal percentage, eighth in free throw percentage, sixth in average rebounds per game, second in fouls, and last in turnovers.

Coming into this game, Canada had lost their first game 70–59 to the Netherlands. They are scheduled to play Brazil today.

Medicinal Value Of Goji Berry}

Submitted by: T. Mahabir

Goji Berry, also known as Wolfberry, is a deciduous shrub. It is a shrub that is native to China, where the red berries of this plant are used in traditional medicine. The berry is also referred to by its scientific name Lycium Barbarum. The berry is used to treat many conditions such as diabetes, malaria, high blood pressure, even cancer. Although scientific research is still going on to determine the exact benefits of the Goji berry, the Chinese do believe that this berry has many special properties that make it a miracle cure indeed.

Different Ways in which Goji Berries are Ingested

The Goji berry has been used as a part of regular food in China since ancient times. The berries may either be cooked or eaten raw when consumed as part of food. The Goji berry juice, extracted from the fruit of this plant, is also used in many applications. The leaves of the Goji berry plant are boiled to yield a decoction or tea that is consumed. The leaves may also be crushed and the extract applied to wounds to clear infections. Many people prefer to use the goji berry leaf tea instead of using the berries directly. There is much information available on the internet on how to extract the essence from the leaves of this plant.

The berries of the Goji berry plant may be differently colored- red, orange, green etc, in different countries. All of them are beneficial and share many similar properties.

Medicinal Value

The Goji berry is used in the treatment of a number of ailments. The berry is believed to improve vision and eliminate problems such as blurred vision. Other more complex eye problems, such as macular degeneration are also treated with goji berries. This herb has also been found quite effective in treating tinnitus or ringing in the ears. In general, many older people take goji berry to ward off these common problems that arise as age advances.

Goji berry is also used in treatment of infectious diseases like malaria and fevers. It reduces the high body temperatures quickly and also has good effect in controlling incessant coughing. Even serious illnesses like cancer may be treated with goji berry concoctions by some medical practitioners.

The berrys anti oxidant properties make it a popular medicinal herb used in treating cardiovascular ailments and inflammatory diseases. It also has polysaccharides that are considered very beneficial in improving overall health and keeping potential heart problems away.

In China, Goji berry is credited with improving the longevity and boosting fertility levels. A number of Chinese regularly ingest this berry to ensure that their health remains good and they live a good number of years.

Although this berry can be taken in raw form owing to its rather sweet taste, many medical practitioners recommend taking it in liquid form. This is because the berrys medicinal benefits get absorbed quickly into the blood stream when it is taken in liquid form. Soon after consuming goji berry tea or extract, you can feel a spurt of energy that proves the effectiveness of taking it in this form.

Brazilian environmentalists tell residents to urinate in shower to save water

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Environmentalists in Brazil are urging the country’s residents to urinate in the shower while washing themselves, to help conserve water and save the rainforest. Television ads being aired in the country claim that by doing so, the nation could save over 1,000 gallons of water per household each year.

SOS Mata Atlantica ran the ad campaign in an attempt to use comedy to get people to reduce the amount of water they use. “[The ad is] a way to be playful about a serious subject,” said Adriana Kfouri, a spokesperson for Atlantica.

The animated ad narrated by children shows people, including a trapeze artist, an alien and dancers, all taking a shower while at the same time, urinating in it. The ending of the ad then states, “Pee in the shower! Save the Atlantic rainforest!”

Ken Livingstone, former mayor of London, England, proposed a similar campaign in 2006. He said urine should be classified as a “green waste” and that “there is no earthly reason that you need to flush the loo if you have merely urinated. That’s a huge saving of water.”

Metropolitan Police to sell New Scotland Yard

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

The Metropolitan Police — the police force for the Greater London area — has announced they may sell their headquarters, New Scotland Yard, in order to cut costs.

They are trying to reduce their £3.6 billion annual budget by £500 million, following cuts by the coalition government. If the sale of New Scotland Yard goes ahead, the Metropolitan Police would move to a new location on the Embankment in the Curtis Green building, formerly the site of Cannon Row Police Station.

Other proposals have been raised including selling off other property assets and closing police counters during off-peak hours, but officer numbers are to be maintained.

New Scotland Yard famously has a three-sided rotating sign that turns 14,000 times per day. John Tully, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, which represents the interests of police officers, said it is “regrettable” that an “iconic building like New Scotland Yard is going to bite the dust”. Tully also noted there will be relocation costs.

Our Words Are Powerful…They Can Change Your Life

By Kent Holden

My husband and I have been on a journey of learning and discovery during the past several years. We have attended excellent seminars, and learned many things from some outstanding mentors and coaches. Some of the things we learned include: the importance of continuing to learn, grow and having coaches/mentors along our journey; the importance of applying our new found knowledge and how challenging that can sometimes be; and how much our words and thoughts play a big role in how we feel, how we see the world, and what we believe about ourselves, others and our future.

The more we learn, the more we realize there is so much more to learn!

One of my most powerful learnings was that our brain sees in “pictures”. Our brain changes everything we hear into pictures. (I used to tell people a way to remember my name, Robin Bair, is to think of a big grizzly bear with a Robin red-breast bird sitting on its shoulder. This gave them a silly picture to remember my name with and it usually worked!)

Heres an example of what I mean. Have you ever told a child: “Dont run” or “Dont hit your brother”? Generally speaking, they dont stop doing it instantly. Why not? I have learned this past year that there are some words the brain does not have a picture for words like dont, not, no, cant, etc. Since their brain does not register the word dont (a negative word), in essence you are actually telling the child “TO run” or “TO hit your brother” which was not what youd intended at all! Whats the solutionto rephrase the sentence and tell the child what you want them TO do.

I experimented with this concept recently with one of one of our eight grandchildren who is a real climber and daredevil, just like her mother. Id find her standing on the folding chairs or table in the kitchen. My first response was to say, “Dont climb on the chair/table”, and of course, she would continue anyway, with a sparkle in her eye. Changing my wording to “Sit on the chair” or “Stay off the table” had amazing results. At first shed look at me, but when I repeated the statement more firmly it worked! She stopped!

Another good example of this concept is when you remind yourself or someone else: “Dont forget to ” What usually happens? Thats right, usually you/they forget to do whatever. But you can change the outcome by changing the sentence to “Remember to” Its really that simple. Its amazing how using a positive, what TO do statement will assist your listener in seeing the picture you really want them to see.

The most challenging part in learning this lesson is changing how I word what I say on a daily basis. Our words are VERY important! Imagine how different your life will be by simply practicing this one concept, which is telling children and others what you want them TO do and eliminate the negative, which is something we want to do in all parts of our life!

I have learned many more things. Because of our new understanding of how words work, we have become more kind and loving towards each other and ourselves. Remember, the words we speak and the pictures those words create are very important. I think this concept is a great one to start practicing in your own life today. So start practicing painting positive pictures today!

Pennsylvania cop on trial for allegedly murdering girlfriend’s estranged husband

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

The trial began today for a Pennsylvania state trooper accused of killing his girlfriend’s estranged husband.

Kevin Foley, 43, is accused of cutting the throat of John Yelenic, a dentist who was in the final stages of finalizing a divorce from his wife, Michele. According to prosecutors, Foley “loathed Dr. Yelenic” so much that he asked another fellow trooper to help him commit the alleged murder, which occurred in Yelenic’s Blairsville home.

Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek told an Indiana County jury that Foley also prayed Yelenic would die, and spread false rumors that Yelenic molested his adopted son.

“You will see Kevin Foley has the motive, the opportunity and the ability to commit this crime, almost to the exclusion of anybody else,” Krastek said.

Foley’s defense attorney, Jeffrey Monzo, said during opening statements that DNA evidence was not conclusive. Monzo admitted to the jury that Foley did not like Yelenic, but said that does not mean he murdered him.

“Kevin Foley is innocent,” he said.

Prosecutors said they could call as many as 70 witnesses to try and prove Foley wanted Yelenic to die. The trial, at the Indiana County Courthouse, is expected to last about three weeks.

Foley, who is on unpaid suspension from the Pennsylvania State Police, is charged with criminal homicide. The jury has the option of convicting him of first-degree murder, which could put Foley in prison for life without parole, or of a lesser degree charge, like manslaughter.

John Yelenic was found dead in his home on April 13, 2006, one day before he was planning on signing his divorce papers. Prosecutors said Foley killed Yelenic after going to the dentist’s house to confront him over the terms of the divorce. Prosecutors claim Foley slashed Yelenic several times with a knife and pushed his head through a small window, causing a further gash on his neck. Yelenic bled to death.

Foley had been living with Michele Yelenic for two years at the time of the alleged homicide. Krastek said Michele also helped perpetuate rumors that Dr. Yelenic molested their son. John and Michele Yelenic had been separated in 2002. Michele Yelenic stood to collect Dr. Yelenic’s estate and a $1 million life insurance policy, and could lose about $2,500 a month in support if the divorce was finalized, a Pennsylvania grand jury previously determined.

Michele Yelenic is expected to testify that Foley was home with her when the alleged murder occurred. Krastek told the jury DNA under Yelenic’s fingerprints will ultimately link him to the murder, as will bloody shoe prints found at the crime scene that match athletic shoes Foley is known to wear.

Monzo also said authorities have failed to investigate several other suspects, including Yelenic’s neighbor. Monzo said Yelenic was on very friendly terms with the neighbor’s wife, which could have given him a motive to commit the murder.

Prior to the trial, Foley’s defense attorneys unsuccessfully sought a change of venue because an overwhelming majority of the jury pool was familiar with the allegations. The change was denied when jurors insisted they had not formed an opinion about the charges.

Kimi Räikkönen will start first for 2007 European Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton suffers a crash

Saturday, July 21, 2007

Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen won the pole on the FIA Formula-1 2007 European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, Nürburg, Germany.

Kimi’s rival Fernando Alonso split the two Ferraris and will start between Kimi and Felipe Massa.

Lewis Hamilton suffered a serious crash in the third qualifying session after his tire broke in Schumacher‘s S-curve and he found himself out of the track running at a tangent to the safety wall. Race officials confirmed that Lewis had been “conscious and speaking”. Still, there are reasonable doubts about his fitness for the race Sunday.

BMW Sauber team drivers 4th and 5th, Mark Webber from Red Bull-Renault 6th, Heikki Kovalainen from Renault 7th and Toyota‘s 8th and 9th.

Before this incident Lewis was fifth, but dropped two the tenth place and will probably lose more with the car change if he’ll participate in the race. It seemes that his incretible series of 9 consecutive pole finishes have come to an end.

The race will feature Marcus Winkelhock, the German driver replacing Christijan Albers in Spyker.

Nonwoven Bags Are More Dangerous Than Plastic Bags

Since the plastic limit is put into practice, the businessman makes the bag as a promotional magic – bags become gifts when people buy food ,beverage bags and a magazine, or pay phone charges. These bags are easy- use, colorful, cute, it is popular among many consumers. But many people concerns that, since the widespread use of bags, when they participate in activities, go shopping, etc., they always receive free bags. Now there are many kinds of bags in houses and it seems too much. These bags are donated, old. Once broken, it will be readily thrown away.” Consumers believe that the quality of present bags are not so good, especially the nonwoven bags. Its robustness is worse than textile fabrics. Some are even bad than plastic bags, and they are not waterproof. Non-woven bags are easily cleaves from the right angle direction. The bags are so easily broken and thrown away frequently. Do they really play an environmental role? Now most of the bags are nonwoven bags. The raw materials are polypropylene or terephthalate glycol ester. But the raw materials of plastic bags are polyethylene .Polypropylene and polyethylene both are not degraded less than 50 years. When the temperature is high, polypropylene will release harmful substances. The weight and volume of non-woven bags is higher than normal plastic bags, it reaches more than 10 times. At the same time, some non-woven bags are decorated with buttons, sequins and some other small parts which can not be recycled. In conclusion, non-woven bags are not environmental than plastic bags which can be recyclable, and easily crushed. There are many companies and enterprises make the bags as gifts to do advertising, the one that covers t a layer of resin outside or with color pattern are not environmentally friendly. And the real green bags ask higher producing costs. Many people also say, plastic limit does not make the use of plastic bags in a limitation. And the one which is not biodegradable bags has spread to everywhere. People suggest that relevant departments should make clear about the requirements of the quality of recycle bags and make a seriously strict law to make it effect. In addition, experts advise that, non-woven material itself is plastic. If it is used in a long period with slow degradation process, the potential crisis is much danger than plastic bags. It may become another great pollution source as plastic bags. Source: www.cnmhc.com
