Three Major Attractions In The San Francisco Bay Area

June, 2014 byAlma Abell

In the San Francisco Bay Area, apartments may look out on one or all of the 3 major attractions in the region. These are why some come to visit the city. They are even why some people decide to live there. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the 3 major attractions are:

 1. The Golden Gate Bridge
 2. Fisherman’s Wharf
 3. Alcatraz

The San Francisco Bay Golden Gate Bridge

In the San Francisco Bay Area, it is hard to escape the art deco beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge. There is also no reason why you would want to. As city landmarks go, this bridge has it all. It is elegant, graceful, overpoweringly big, historically significant and, to a large extent, though this depends upon the time of day, practical.

Built in over a 4-year period in the 1930s, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to traffic on May 27-28, 1937. Its successful construction owns much to chief engineer and the man who conceived the idea Joseph Baermann Strauss (1870–1938). He was helped out on the project by Irving Morrow (1884–1952) the architect responsible for the design and Charles Alton Ellis (1876–1949), another experienced significant engineer and all the workers. Today, it remains one of the most recognizable symbols of a city with a museum tucked under the North Tower – the Bay Area Discovery Museum

Fisherman’s Wharf

Sometimes considered as part of Downtown San Francisco, Fisherman’s Wharf is a major destination. The actual Wharf has been home to fishing boats since the Gold Rush. The boats still arrive along with crowds to watch them unload their fresh catch. Yet, the character of the Wharf has changed with the times. Today, visitors enjoy taking part in a variety of regularly scheduled events throughout the year.

You can catch a movie in 7D, dine at one of several restaurants, shop at Pier 39 or wander along the Bay. There are museums and the Aquarium. If you are a resident of one of the many San Francisco Bay Area apartments, you can volunteer to help out with such worthy projects as the The Fishermen’s and Seamen’s Memorial Chapel.

Alcatraz

Probably the most famous prison in North America was Alcatraz. Locate on the island of the same name in the middle of the Bay, it had a reputation for being one of the toughest prisons to break out of and live. This high security prison, closed since 1963, was once home to such infamous men as Al Capone, “Machine Gun” Kelly and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz.

Today, you can join others as they ride boats out to visit the island and tour the facilities. You can learn all about its history and who stayed there between its opening and closing dates – 1934-1963. If you are feeling particularly fearless, you can take part in an evening or night time tour.

If you love the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoy “the Birdman of Alcatraz,” you may want to look for San Francisco Bay Area apartments that offer you the chance to visit on a regular basis these attractions. Spend some time in the city. Ride a Cable Car or sail out on a Ferry. When you live in San Francisco, the transportation options seem endless.

More worries of further contamination of food from China

Friday, September 26, 2008

The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning that more food imported from China may be contaminated with melamine, a chemical used in the manufacturing of plastics. Melamine, although nontoxic in very small amounts, can cause severe kidney problems in large doses.

Guanshengyuan, a Chinese company that makes children’s candy, has stopped selling its popular brand White Rabbit, which is sold nationally in China, after tests confirmed the presence of melamine. Bright foods owns the candy company. Earlier their powdered milk was found to contain melamine which sickened over 53,000 people and was responsible for the deaths of at least four infant children. Guanshengyuan has stopped exporting their goods to the nearly 50 companies overseas that buy them.

Melamine has also been found in Hong Kong in baby cereal and vegetable formula made by Heinz. It has also been found in wasabi crackers which are manufactured by the Chinese company, Silang House.

Another Chinese food company called Marudai Food Co. has also halted the sales of several items such as meat buns, cream buns and corn crepes made with cream over fears that melamine laced powered milk has contaminated their products. So far there have been no reports of any illnesses associated with Marudai Foods.

Further items recalled or other products that feared to be contaminated with melamine are Mr. Browns Instant Coffee and tea products, along with their powdered milk.

The first report of contamination came last week when the Chinese health ministry confirmed that the companies responsible for producing the milk were trying to repair their damaged public image by increasing output using melamine. The Chinese Health Ministry has stated that most of the tainted milk was produced by Shijiazhuang Sanlu Group Co.

The WHO says that women with infants should consider breast feeding for the time being on infants aged at least six months, until the contaminated milk can be removed from the consumption chain.

“WHO recommends that all infants should be fed exclusively with breast milk for the first six months of life. No other liquid or food, not even water, is needed during this period. Thereafter, infants should receive adequate and safe complementary foods while breastfeeding continues up to two years of age and beyond,” said the WHO in a statement on their website.

In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the presence of melamine in pet food that was imported from China. Samples indicated that wheat gluten, used as an ingredient in the pet food, was contaminated with the chemical. As a result of the contamination, the FDA said some of the contaminated gluten entered the human food chain. At least 45 people ate contaminated pork which was traced to pigs from a farm in California. The pigs had eaten feed that had been contaminated. There were no reports of deaths or illnesses.

Scottish prosecutors keeping quiet about Lanarkshire surgical deaths

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Crown Office are staying quiet about possible prosecutions after an inquiry found medical failures caused three deaths at NHS Lanarkshire.

In response to a specific question as to the possibility of prosecutions, a Crown Office spokesperson told Wikinews today that “The three deaths were fully investigated by the Procurator Fiscal and reported to Crown Counsel [laywers] to consider. Crown Counsel concluded that, given the facts and circumstances of the deaths, a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) was the appropriate forum to consider the circumstances of the deaths.” It was further noted that “[a] FAI cannot make any findings of fault/blame against individuals.”

However, Crown Office did not specifically rule out prosecutions for offences such as cuplable homicide despite the spokesperson noting this was a direct response to such a question. They also declined to comment on National Health Service care as “it would not be appropriate to comment on the provision of NHS services” and entirely ignored questions about Crown Office satisfaction in the inquiry’s outcome and the length of time it took to reach a conclusion. The inquiry wrapped up last week but the deaths were in 2006.

Agnes Nicol, George Johnstone, and Andrew Ritchie died within a three-month period following keyhole surgery to remove their gall bladders.

Later expanded to look at all three deaths, the inquiry initially established to look into the case of Nicol, 50, who received surgery in late 2005. A surgeon at Wishaw General Hospital mistakenly cut her bile duct and her right hepatic artery. Whilst suturing her portal vein, her liver was left with 20% of its normal blood supply; the errors were not discovered until her transfer to liver specialists at Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary.

By then, her liver was seriously damaged. She developed septicaemia, dying from multiple organ failure in March 2006.

Johnstone, 54, underwent the same procedure at Monklands District General Hospital on May 9, 2006. A consultant surgeon accidentally damaged, possibly severing, his bile duct. He died two days later in intensive care from the combined effects of multiple organ failure and a heart ailment.

Ritchie, 62, died in intensive care a week after an operation in June 2006. He died from intra abdominal haemorrhage caused by errors during the surgery.

Different surgeons were involved each time and the inquiry, under Sheriff Robert Dickson, found no evidence of poor training or inadequate experience. Dickson noted that in each case there was lack of action on a “growing body of evidence that there was something fundamentally wrong with the patient” and surgeons failed to contemplate their own actions as potentially responsible. He agreed with two professors that it may have been possible to save their lives “had the post-operative care been to the standard which they expected, and had there been a proper management plan which staff could have worked to” and noted that all the patients suffered from a lack of adequate medical notes being available after their surgery. He described the care as having “clear faults”.

NHS Lanarkshire apologised and said improvements had been made regarding “these types of cases” as well as with document management. Wikinews got in touch seeking details of the changes made but the health trust failed to respond.

School bus crashes during driver’s examination

Tuesday, July 3, 2007

A woman, who was taking the road test to become a licensed school bus driver, crashed a bus into a utility pole in White Plains, New York, today. The wreck occurred on South Kensico Road between the intersections with Minevera Place and Oakley Avenue.

The Journal News reported that the accident occurred at 11:30 a.m. EDT (UTC-4) and that neither the student driver nor the examiner from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was injured.

According to The Journal News the road was closed in both directions. Police and workers from the utility company, Con Edison, were on the scene inspecting the damage. The utility pole had snapped at the bottom and it was leaning on the bus.

Wikinews went to the crash site and found that Con Edison crews were still working to replace the pole. Nearly five hours after the crash, a new pole had been installed and the old one was being held parallel up against it. Workers were transferring the wires onto the new pole.

Kensico Road had been reopened, but only in one lane. Workers let traffic pass alternating between one direction and then the other. Ironically, the green sign that is affixed to the pole reads “DMV test site starts here.”

Ahmadinejad sends letter to George W. Bush

Tuesday, May 9, 2006For the first time in three decades, direct and at least partially public diplomatic communication will commence between the United States (US) and Iran. Iranian government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said that Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has sent a letter to the U.S. president George W. Bush proposing “new solutions for getting out of international problems and the current fragile situation of the world”.

Mr Gholam-Hossein Elham did not say whether the letter mentioned the nuclear dispute, one of the diplomatic problems currently straining relations between Iran and the USA. This information arrived one day after the Iranian parliament announced that it might retract from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if Western pressure over its programme was to increase.

Differing reports have been made as to whether or not the letter will be made public, and if so, when. In its online report of 8 May 2006, 09:25 GMT, the BBC quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi as saying that the contents of the letter would be made public once Bush had received it. The updated version of the report of 8 May 2006, 14:52 GMT, quotes Asefi as saying that the contents would be made public “at the right time”. An ABC report quoted Gholam-Hossein Elham as saying “it is not an open letter.”

Iran’s foreign affairs minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, delivered the letter to the United States’ interests section in the Swiss embassy in Tehran on Monday. The United States has not held diplomatic relations with Iran since the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said “this letter isn’t it. This letter is not the place that one would find an opening to engage on the nuclear issue or anything of the sort.”

“It isn’t addressing the issues that we’re dealing with in a concrete way,” she added.

John R. Bolton, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, also read the letter, saying, “I think it is typical of Iran that when major decisions are about to be taken … that they have tried to throw sand in the eyes of the proponents of the action. That’s what this may be.”

The letter has since been put on an official Iranian website, and on Tuesday, Ahmadinejad said “the letter to US President George Bush carries the Iranian nation’s views and comments on international issues as well as suggestions for resolving the many problems facing humanity.”

EU adopts renewable energy measures

Friday, March 9, 2007File:Angela Merkel SJ8.jpg

European Union leaders on the second day of their summit have agreed on measures to decrease emission of greenhouse gases and to start using more biological fuels. The governments of the 27 countries in Brussels endorsed 3 main binding targets:

 • to reduce greenhouse gas emission levels by the year 2020 by 20% compared to the level of 1990
 • renewable energy should make up 20% of energy consumption by 2020
 • a 10% share for biofuels in the total consumption of fuels in E.U. transport.

This way, the E.U. wants to contribute in reaching the strategic goal of limiting the global average temperature increase to less than 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The individual targets for countries will need to be established based on national starting points and potentials, according to the plan. The plans don’t mention an enforcement mechanism yet.

“We can say to the rest of the world, Europe is taking the lead. You should join us fighting climate change.”

In the summit’s conclusions, the E.U. underlines its ambitions as a leading force in international climate protection. German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the targets “ambitious and credible”.

Europe is prepared to even increase the objectives if other developed countries follow suit, and it invites other countries to come forward with their plans for the environment beyond 2012, when the Kyoto protocol ends. In June, Merkel plans to discuss the measures with the other members on the Group of Eight summit.

The proposal takes into account the sovereignty of individual countries to determine exactly which energy sources they use. More specifically, each member state should decide if they wish to use nuclear power or not. Some countries oppose the use of nuclear energy as an alternative to fossil fuels, and Germany is even in the process of dismantling its nuclear energy production. France on the other hand produces 70% of its electricity in nuclear power plants. [13% of France’s total energy consumption is nuclear.] The report also stresses the importance of nuclear safety in the discussion over nuclear energy.

The summit also asked the European Commission to come up with proposals to reduce energy consumption in lighting and offices by 2008 and 2009. The idea is to replace conventional light bulbs with more energy-efficient alternatives such as the energy saving light bulb.

Another energy-related topic in the conclusions is an agreement on increased security of energy supply. Through member state solidarity and a more interconnected and integrated market, eastern European countries hope to secure their energy supplies in case Russia would cut the supply.

During their two-days summit, the E.U. also discussed economic growth, employment, better regulations and international relations issues.

Neil Patrick Harris How I Met Your Surrogate Mother

By Delwyn Lounsbury

Neil Patrick Harris and boyfriend David Burtka announced that they had fraternal twins on October 12, 2010 by surrogate mother.

Remarkably, the surrogacy procedure saw each have one of their sperm take and produce a baby. The fraternal twins, a boy and a girl, were named Harper Grace and Gideon Scott. It is unknown at this time which one is whose. It is certain that each of the fathers sired a child. Of course, a DNA test would tell which. They may never want to know. How lucky to be able to both share in the fathering process. They all live in their famous fathers Hollywood Hills home in Los Angeles, California

A TV show star on the long running How I Met Your Mother, actor Harris, 37, remarked to People Magazine, “We found an egg donor anonymously through a hilarious process of looking at people’s profiles and then an amazing surrogate who had helped same-sex couples before.”

David Burtka, who quit acting recently to become a chef, added; “When we first found out it was fraternal twins, we were thrilled.”

Elton John,63, and his civil partner David Furnish, 48, also announced recently that they had a baby boy by surrogate birth, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, born on December 25, 2010. The baby born in California weighed 7 pounds and 15 ounces.

Zachary was born to an unidentified birth mother that was not the biological mother but had carried the baby after being implanted with a donor egg coming from another anonymous woman. This means that little Furnish-John in a sense has two fathers and two mothers. It is speculated that Furnish’s sperm was used since he is younger.

Reports say they chose California because there are more certain laws on surrogacy especially when it comes to gay and lesbian parents seeking surrogate mothers. There are no laws banning or against surrogacy here in California where we also have a California commercial surrogacy agency.

On Christmas Day Neil Patrick Harris wrote on Twitter, “Great – Congratulations to David Furnish & Elton John on the birth of their son Zachary! Can’t wait for play dates in the south of France.”

Harris and Burtka recently moved to a more child appropriate home in the Hollywood hills and have a new nursery with no less that an old time Disneyland theme park decor.

Neil Patrick Harris, (born June 15, 1973) is an American actor, singer and even magician. His prominent roles include the leading TV role in, Doogie Howser, M.D.(Golden Globe nomination), Colonel Carl Jenkins in Starship Troopers, a fictitious version of himself in the Harold and Kumar series, the title role in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and, of course, the current TV series, as the womanizing Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother. He hosted the 63rd Tony Awards on June 7, 2009 and on August 2010 he won two Emmy Awards. Harris’ volume of work has too many other appearances to mention here. He has been named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2010.

Harris is openly gay, confirming that in November 2006 saying, “I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love.”

Those interested in surrogacy should be aware that a 1993 California gestational surrogacy court case (Johnson v. Calvert) awarded the intended parents all rights to a surrogate born child. Ever since then there has been good court acceptance. The birth certificate will have the intended parents names.

The baby is automatically a U.S. citizen!

In 2005 the California Supreme Court decided three cases together that had to do with lesbian couples who had reproduced using surrogacy. The court ruled that under the the Uniform Parentage Act, two women can be the legal parents of a child produced through surrogacy.

This ruling presumably applies to the rest of the LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) community. Since these court rulings are now case law, this makes California the land of opportunity for infertile people around the world plus gay surrogacy, lesbian surrogacy and same sex parenting.

BBC apologises to Queen Elizabeth II for misrepresentation in documentary

Friday, July 13, 2007

The BBC would like to apologise to both the Queen and Annie Leibovitz for any upset this may have caused.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has apologised to Queen Elizabeth II and photographer, Annie Leibovitz, after a trailer for a documentary suggested she had walked out of a portrait sitting when the photographer asked her to remove her crown.

The trailer shows a clip of the photographer telling the Queen, “I think it will look better without the crown because the garter robe is so…” The Queen responded with “Less dressy! What do you think this is?” The following clip shows the Queen walking down a corridor saying, “I’m not changing anything. I’ve had enough dressing like this, thank you very much.”

It has since been clarified that this second clip shows the Queen arriving at the sitting, not departing.

In a statement the BBC said, “In this trailer there is a sequence that implies that the Queen left a sitting prematurely. This was not the case and the actual sequence of events was mis-represented. The BBC would like to apologise to both the Queen and Annie Leibovitz for any upset this may have caused.”

The BBC blamed a production error for the mistake, saying, “This assembly was never intended to be seen by the public or the press. Unfortunately, this assembly was given in error to the BBC personnel who were preparing the BBC One autumn launch tape.”

The company responsible for the editing of the documentary, RDF Media, also apologized to the Queen. Michael Grade, previous controller of BBC One, blamed the mistake on “young, untrained” workers who “don’t understand that the basic ethic of broadcasting in this country is trust.”

Photographer, Leibowitz, commenting about the session in Vanity Fair even before the release of the trailer, said, “She doesn’t really want to get dressed up any more. She just couldn’t be bothered and I admired her for that.”
