Canadian charter airline Skyservice suspends operations

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Skyservice, a Canadian charter airline, has cancelled several flights from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, with reports that the airline has ceased operations.

The company cites debt levels and changes in the vacation travel market with its decision to shut down operations and file for receivership. At the time of the filing in Ontario Superior Court, Skyservice is said to owe almost $9 million CAD to long-term partner and Thomas Cook subsidiary Sunquest Vacations. This situation exacerbated the debt load already put on the airline by a leveraged buyout in 2007 by Vancouver-based private equity firm Gibralt Capital Corporation. That placed more debt than was workable on the troubled airline, along with Roynat Capital calling in their loans to Skyservice earlier in the year.

Skyservice has stated that it will work with its partner companies and other providers to ensure customers stranded by the airline’s sudden shutdown are dealt with effectively, according to a company representative. In addition to customers impacted by the cancellation of flights for the month of April, approximately 860 jobs are expected to be lost as a result of this shutdown.

Tour operator Signature Vacations, under a contract with Skyservice until 2013, has stated that they were prepared for the airline’s receivership, having joined forces with rival service Sunwing Airlines.

Last year, operator Conquest Vacations declared bankruptcy, allegedly due to the economic downturn and reduced revenues throughout the industry.

Complete Home Fire Protection In Sedalia Should Include A Monitored Fire Alarm

byAlma Abell

Every year there are over one and a half million fires in the U.S. and, unfortunately, many of those fires claim the lives of innocent people. To be truly safe from a possible fire, you need a complete home fire protection system that includes a comprehensive smoke and fire alarm that immediately notifies the monitoring company when there is a problem. The monitoring company, in turn, will notify the fire department so that they can catch the fire before it becomes out of control. A comprehensive home fire protection system is the absolute best way to protect yourself and your family from a fire, making it a very important addition to your home.

Costing Less Than You Think

Companies that offer systems for home fire protection in Sedalia monitor the systems 24 hours a day so even if you are not at home, they can contact the fire department for you when a fire starts. This feature is priceless because it means that even if you are away from home, the fire damage can be greatly reduced, thanks to a complete and monitored home fire protection system purchased from a reputable security company. These systems also cost a lot less than you think because you only pay a small one-time fee for the system itself while the monthly monitoring fee remains the same.

DIY Systems Are Not the Same

Most do-it-yourself security systems simply aren’t as effective as professional security systems because they are usually missing one main perk – 24/7 monitoring of your home. These systems are typically good only if you are home because they make a noise when someone tries to break in or a fire starts but they do nothing if you are gone. Sedalia home fire protection that involves round-the-clock monitoring works best and, in fact, is the only type of security protection that really works.

Volcano erupts in southern Chile

Saturday, April 25, 2015

The Calbuco volcano in Southern Chile erupted twice on Wednesday. It was the first major eruption of the volcano in over fifty years.

The Chilean National Geology and Mining Service said the second eruption was more powerful than the first. By reports, the first eruption caused some regional panic. Emergency officials had very little time to alert local residents because of its abruptness.

The Chilean interior ministry said over 4,000 people were evacuated. The volcanic ash rose upward over six miles and has caused flight cancellations. According to Chilean health ministry sanitary planning division head Bernardo Martorell, the ash could cause water pollution and eye and skin infections. As of yesterday, Associated Press said no-one was reported injured as a result of the eruption. But on Thursday a ministry official said they fear another eruption may occur.

This was not the only volcanic eruption in the region in recent years. Another volcano in Southern Chile erupted in back in 2011. Due to that violent eruption, hundreds of flights were cancelled and over 3,000 people evacuated.

The 6,500 foot volcano is reportedly among the three most hazardous in Chile.

Bombings kill over 100 in Baghdad

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

Iraqi police say a series of car bombings across the capital, Baghdad, killed at least 127 people, wounding hundreds of others.

Reports say three of today’s blasts were coordinated. The first occurred at 10:25 local time (07:25 GMT), the others following within minutes. One of the bombs targeted the busy Shourja Market in central Baghdad, near to the Iraqi health ministry. The others were detonated near the Interior Ministry in eastern Baghdad and the Labor Ministry.

Police say that earlier, a suicide car bomber struck a police patrol in Dora, southern Baghdad, killing three policemen and twelve students at a local college. Another explosion in central Baghdad has also been reported.

The attacks come just two days after the Iraqi parliament passed a law vital for elections to be held early next year. Mowaffaq al-Rubaie, a former Iraqi security adviser, blamed al-Qaeda, saying they have been active in Baghdad recently and are trying to destabilize the government before elections.

“The aim is to show the government is unable to protect civilian[s] and its own people and also to deter people from going to ballot boxes,” al-Rubaie said.

Tuesday’s attacks were the worst in the Iraqi capital since late October when twin bomb attacks outside municipal offices killed at least 155 people.

Are You Eligible For A Roof Replacement In Des Moines?

byadmin

How old is your roof? Does it leak or look as if it might collapse after the next heavy snowfall? Roofs don’t last forever and if you feel as if your roof is in bad shape, you should do something about it.

It’s not hard to find roof replacement in Des Moines and it’s smarter to get the process started now rather than waiting until your roof’s condition gets even worse.

Get an Inspection

If you feel as if your roof isn’t doing so well, you should get an inspection from a roofing professional. There are plenty of roofers that can handle a Des Moines roof replacement so you’ll be able to easily find a roofer near you.

Getting an inspection will allow you to figure out how much the roof replacement will cost. Usually, the roofer you contact will come out to your home and take a look at your roof. They might inspect the roof for several hours or only a few minutes, depending on how bad your roof is. The worse your roof is, the more work the roofer will have to do.

Why Get a Replacement Now?

If your roof is leaking, it’s a good idea to get a roof replacement sooner than later. Leaky roofs can lead to attic damage, ceiling damage, and furniture damage as well. You should also know that it’s more difficult to replace a roof when it’s raining so you should check the weather before hiring a roofer to start the job for you.

It’s worth getting a new roof for a lot of reasons. A new roof could increase your home’s property value, for instance. If you’re nervous about the coming rainy season, you should reach out to a roofing company and get the whole process started before the rain starts pouring down on your leaky roof.

Major explosion at Mt. Redoubt volcano in Alaska

Friday, April 4, 2008

The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) reported today a “significant explosive event” had occurred at Mount Redoubt in Alaska. Lightning was observed within an ash cloud that formed over the volcano. As a result the AVO raised the alert level to ‘warning’ and level ‘red’ for aviation. The event occurred at 6:00 a.m. (AKDT).

According to the Observatory, seismic activity caused a major lahar, similar to a mudslide or landslide, to occur in the Drift River Valley. Inhabitants of the Valley were advised to seek high ground and take immediate precautions against flooding. So far there are no reports of injuries or evacuations. Wikinews has e-mailed the AVO for a statement regarding the event, but has yet to receive a reply.

“Strong, but diminishing seismic activity is continuing as of 07:35 AKDT,” said the AVO on its website. At 9:18 a.m., the AVO reported that the event had ended. “Continuing seismic activity and web camera images indicate that low level emissions of steam, gas, and some volcanic ash are continuing to be emitted at the volcano at altitudes of [20,000 feet].” The AVO is sending a team to investigate the latest eruption which will include a fly-over to take readings on the gases being emitted.

The explosion sent volcanic ash which spread to “Homer, Anchor Point, and Seldovia” to an altitude of over 50,000 feet. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued an advisory stating that ash fall can be expected from “Ninilchik Southward through mid morning.” The advisory is scheduled to end at 10:00 a.m. (AKDT).

As a result of recent eruptions at Redoubt, half of the 6 million gallons of crude oil stored in the Drift Valley will be removed to a safer location. There is no word on when the move will take place. The storage facility is located just 22 miles from Redoubt.

Wikinews interviews Rocky De La Fuente, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Thursday, March 31, 2016

Businessman Rocky De La Fuente took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

The 61-year-old De La Fuente resides in San Diego, California, grew up in Tijuana, and owns multiple businesses and properties throughout the world. Since getting his start in the automobile industry, De La Fuente has branched out into the banking and real estate markets. Despite not having held or sought political office previously, he has been involved in politics, serving as the first-ever Hispanic superdelegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention.

De La Fuente entered the 2016 presidential race last October largely due to his dissatisfaction with Republican front-runner Donald Trump. He argues he is a more accomplished businessman than Trump, and attacks Trump as “a clown,” “a joke,” “dangerous,” and “in the same category as Hitler.” Nevertheless, De La Fuente’s business background begets comparisons with Trump. The Alaskan Midnight Sun blog described him as the Democrats’ “own Donald Trump.”

While receiving only minimal media coverage, he has campaigned actively, and according to the latest Federal Election Commission filing, loaned almost US$ 4 million of his own money to the campaign. He has qualified for 48 primary and caucus ballots, but has not yet obtained any delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Thus far, according to the count at The Green Papers, De La Fuente has received 35,406 votes, or 0.23% of the total votes cast. He leads among the many lesser-known candidates but trails both Senator Bernie Sanders who has received nearly 6.5 million votes and front-runner Hillary Clinton who has just shy of 9 million votes.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, De La Fuente discusses his personal background, his positions on political issues, his current campaign for president, and his political future.
