Saudis boycott Danish dairy produce

Friday, January 27, 2006

On January 26, 2006, a massive boycott of dairy produce from Arla Foods started in Saudi Arabia over what is perceived as a Danish attack on Muslim values. The Saudi ambassador to Denmark has been recalled for consultations.

The Danish/Swedish dairy company Arla is facing a massive loss after a spreading boycott of its produce in Saudi Arabia. Four Saudi retail chains have already removed Arla products from the shelves. One retail chain has placed yellow warning tape (common fare for accidents and crime scenes) over Arla products. There have been cases reported of Arla delivery trucks being attacked by stones thrown from bystanders. Marianne Castenskiold, a senior consultant for Dansk Industri, expressed a fear that the boycott will spread to other countries in the region and have detrimental effects on other Danish products. Denmark is one of the leading exporters of agriculture in northern Europe, whose economy is heavily dependent on foreign trade and investment.

The boycott has been announced at Friday prayer services in Saudi mosques since January 20, 2006, obviously helping to foment popular support of the nation’s response to Denmark’s alleged ignorance of Muslim values. On at least one occasion, a delivery truck has been greeted by thrown stones.

The boycott is a response to the publication of an article in a major Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten. In its September 30, 2005 issue, the paper printed 12 drawings of the Muslim prophet Muhammed, as a response to previous news reports that the publisher of a forthcoming childrens’ book about the prophet had had difficulty in finding an illustrator, due to fear of extremist reactions; drawings of the prophet are prohibited by Islamic Law (see aniconism). In an attempt to start a debate over freedom of speech in Denmark, the newspaper printed 12 drawings of the prophet. Four of these were of a satirical nature, with one showing the prophet with a turban hiding a lit bomb.

The immediate reactions to the publication of the drawings included ambassadors from 12 Muslim countries demanding that the Danish Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, denounce the newspaper. Rasmussen rejected this demand, stating that “Danish freedom of speech does not allow the government to control what newspapers print”. He further noted that the only possible legal action against the newspaper would be one under the charge of blasphemy.

A debate ensued over the following months about freedom of speech and its value in relation to avoiding religious taboos. In mid-December 2005, a delegation from several Danish Muslim organizations went on a tour in several Middle-Eastern and Arabic countries, reportedly to gain sympathy for their point of view. Several reports state that during the tour the difficulties faced by Muslims in Denmark were grossly overstated.

Record Breaking Kitesurfing Challenge Across The Bristol Channel}

Submitted by: Kiteboarding Stuff

In the name of extreme sports and competition, we bring you another chapter and event to see this year. This race combines the extreme elements of weather, sports and competition in both land and sea. Now comes the high tech boost of 3D printing that are made for kitesurfers who are about to race across the Bristol Channel this week, aiming to beat the drivers on the land for the very first time.

Its also an event that aims to change the way kiteboards are made in general knowledge. The students of University of Wales TSD Swansea, who also takes part of this extraordinary event, take off with this competition in which they also aim for making a history in the world of sport with their skills in modifying boards with 3d printed parts. It is a process in which it has the ability to transform the artistry and manufacturing of kitesurfing equipment into a whole new image.

As it is aiming to promote better extreme kitesurfing sport, it is also designed to promote the first extreme sports engineering design course that is created by the students of University of Wales Trinity Saint David Swansea, while on the other hand, the project is also designed to promote some lightning fast kiting experience. The students of the said university collaborated with Stratasys by using their Fortus 3D Production System that helps modify the design of the boards to use. It will help send students flying across the channel with the power of 3D printing technology behind them. It will be an amazing event to witness.

Dr. Ross Head, the Product Design Manager for Cerebra at the University of Wales TSD Swansea, explains the use of 3D printing technology with kitesurfing, The use of 3D printing in product design, and especially in the extreme sport market, is revolutionizing the manufacturing process and the speed to which companies can bring new products to market. We wanted our students to witness this first hand. Dr. Ross Head is also one of the kitesurfers who are into the challenge to cross the Bristol Channel.

With the University of Wales TSD Swansea students collaborated with the help from Stratasys, they have come up with the goals of great control, speed and technical reliability. Aside from that, they also have:

1. 3D printed fins, offering better size, shape, and angles to catch the wind.

2. Carbon fiber wrapping for rigidity and improved, lighter weight, and higher traveling speed.

3. 3D printed inserts to attach the foot straps to the board, designed to achieve the maximum strength possible as they are glued into the foam core.

For the competition to begin, there are five kitesurfers who will be competing against another group of individuals who will be doing their kitesurfing skills on land. They will also traveling the same destination in a standard Japanese hybrid car. The contest is expected to last several hours, depending on wind and water conditions. And aside from that, it will be an event that everyone is not expecting at all. For 3D printing the new and improved parts, they employed two Stratasys Fortus 250mc 3D Production Systems in collaboration with Stratasys reseller, Laser Lines. We redesigned the boards fins using a quad configuration with parts 3D printed using PC-ABS. These new fins provide us with improved lateral grip in the water and the ability to make quick turns. On the underside of the boards, we also designed a very flat rocker line, which means that the boards plane easily and achieve much higher speeds. When you put all of these improvements together, they contribute towards considerable performance gains, explained by Dr. Ross Head.

It will be an event full of fun and exciting adventure. Aside from that, it will be a lifetime collegiate experience, in both intellectual and experiential endeavor for the students of the University of Wales will learn more about proper:

1. Design

2. Manufacturing

3. Commercial market challenges

4. Career options

Are you looking forward to seeing this event? We will all be surprised of how this event will turn out real soon. See you all there folks!

Grand National winning horse ‘Comply or Die’ dies, aged 17

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

Comply or Die, the racehorse who won the 2008 Grand National has died at the age of 17. His death was announced by his former trainer, David Pipe. He died over at the weekend in Gloucestershire, where he had been staying with jockey Timmy Murphy. He was cremated on Monday and his ashes will return to Murphy.

Murphy was the jockey in the saddle when Comply or Die won the 2008 Grand National. Speaking to the Press Association, he spoke about the horse’s death. He said, “He was part of the furniture at home so it’s very sad. He gave me the greatest day of my career, obviously that can never be taken away. He paraded at Cheltenham and Aintree and was getting ready to do some dressage in the summer. I’m not actually sure how he died, to be honest, but it wasn’t nice to come home to. He was cremated on Monday. He was a happy horse and he was also very clever.”

During his racing career he made £798,809 in prize-money after winning a total of eight races.

The 2008 Grand National victory was his greatest achievement and he almost matched it when he came second place in 2009. He retired in 2011 but remained active, often being paraded at race grounds such as Aintree and Cheltenham. He also participated in some hunting activities. Pipe said, “Since his retirement he had been a lead-horse at Timmy Murphy’s establishment before trying his hand at dressage, a discipline in which he had proven very successful”.

Tributes have been paid to Comply or Die on social media by horse racing fans with several tweeting their appreciation and memories.

Libya releases four foreign journalists

Sunday, May 22, 2011

Wednesday saw Libya release four journalists, detained for six weeks and, accused of entering the country illegally. The two Americans, one British, and Spanish correspondents were taken to Tripoli’s Rixo hotel upon their release.

James Foley, Clare Morgana Gillis, Nigel Chandler and Spanish photographer Manu Brabo were captured on April 4 by Muammar al-Gaddafi’s military; the day prior to their release, a suspended sentence of one year and $154 fine were imposed for their illegal entry to Libya.

Moussa Ibrahim, a government spokesman, said the detainees are free to stay and carry on reporting in Libya or, if they requested to leave, could be escorted to the Tunisian border. Claiming their detention was due to confusion over the journalists’ identities, and citing foreign combatants fighting with rebel forces, as the cause of the mix-up, Ibrahim offered an apology and stated that, as journalists, they are harmless.

The journalists worked for The New York Times, GlobalPost, the Atlantic, USA Today, and the BBC. The fate of South African photographer Anton Hammerl is still unclear and he is believed to be still missing.

The foreign journalists were held in different detention centres around Tripoli and refused contact with the outside world.

The conflict between uprising rebel forces and Gaddafi’s Libyan government continues from February this year.

Under the UN, NATO forces are currently carrying out air strikes across Libya recently focussing attacks in Tripoli. Aiming to protect civillians from Col Muammer Gaddafi trying to quash the anti-government rebellion.

Fire kills three and closes main transport route into Western Australia

Tuesday, January 1, 2008

A fire in the Borrabbin National Park between Southern Cross and Coolgardie Western Australia, has so far burnt out 29,000 hectares and killed three truck drivers when the convoy they were travelling in was engulfed by the flames. Great Eastern Highway the primary road for all traffic from Perth heading to the East Coast of Australia has been closed. An alternate route is in place, police are diverting traffic at Norseman. The diversion adds 250 km(160 mi) for the journey to Perth.

The three truck drivers died on Sunday night after they joined a convoy that was released from Coolgardie after being told that the road was safe. Kieran McNamara director general of the Department of Environment and Conservation(DEC) admitted that it had been caught out by its decision to reopen the road at 8pm (wst) on 30 December.

Mr McNamara said “The decision was made with the advice from people at the firefront, and with the latest weather forecasts, and was judged to be the right decision and the safe decision at the time and in those circumstances… Regrettably and with hindsight, that’s not how it’s turned out.”

The driver of another truck in the convoy that was destroyed escaped with burns to his hands and was rushed through the fire front by firefighters to Yellowdine, another driver was rescued uninjured and return to Coolgardie, a spokesman for Whiteline transport the owners of this truck were thankful their driver survived unharmed saying the cost of the vehicle lost was about AU$400,000 plus cargo. Police confirmed that four trucks were destroyed by the fire.

Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia reported that they were fighting the fire without using water. All efforts were focused on building fire breaks with heavy machinery to contain the fire, that 90 volunteer fire fighters on the scene were there to defend the bulldozers.

The fire is still burning on a 150 km (90 mi) front, DEC spokesman says fire fighters are hoping to bring the fire under control with an expected cool change on Wednesday. The Weather Bureau has forecast temperatures to return above 40°C(105°F) by Thursday.

Local Police say that Great Eastern Highway will remain closed until the fire is under control and the damaged vehicles have been removed from the scene, at this stage its not expected to occur before Sunday.

1. How does class status affect adult learning?

2. Rubenson, K. Social class and adult education policy. New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, VOL 106.

3. The main points of the article, including the main conclusions of the article.

The article gives a brief overview of the changes that are currently taking place in the society. Those changes are concerned with shifting political platforms on which they are building a new social ideology. This new thinking is based on the massive appeal of the political parties to a different sector in the society. From workers and the disadvantaged politics have moved their attention to the growing middle class as they are acting in terms of capital industrial circumstances. The author of the article argues that global trends have led such notion as governmental responsibility for adult education to a mere disappearance. Nowadays governments are basically leaving the problem of adult education and lifelong learning to individuals and claim that economic movements and free international markets are taking control over such things as education. Basically, the commentary claims that there is no problem of social class being an obstacle to adult education, but there are macro forces influencing it, such as technology changes and economic competition. Therefore one can conclude that people are solely responsible for their own education if they want to stay an active part of the work force, although in reality government has to take care of providing certain programs to those who need them. Evidently this does not happen and those who are dependable on welfare programs, are not getting enough education and training to obtain a job in a well-paid place with opportunity of career growth. On the other hand, workers who are already trained and considered highly skilled are getting more training that is provided by their companies in order to guarantee a decent future performance. The only positive critique in the article was given to the Nordic practices that are employed to help working class obtain training and participate in educational processes. Labor-market policies are the major factors taken into consideration when educational and training programs are drafted in Sweden for instance. The author agrees with such system of taking care of unemployed as it provides for the country more educated labor force that in turn will support economy as a whole.

4. What the article meant to you, why it had an impact on you, what insights did you discover?

This article in general is a useful piece of information with logical structure and conclusions. It has revealed important findings through works of many researches that state that society nowadays looks different than in the 20th century however the change in social attitudes did not alter trends in adult education for certain classes. This conclusion allowed me to think in a new direction for I realize that lifelong learning has to be approached in a new way in order to be effective. As an adult educator I recognize that motivation is one of the most important factors of successful learning process and knowing what motivates people of different working class/position will lead to more effective results.

5. What you could personally use and specifically apply from the article to help you become a better adult educator? Describe what is relevant to you and how you may practically apply the information.

Knowing that people in a modern world are driven by the idea of equality in social classes, and at the same time view education as a measure of status is essential to approaching students in a right way. Personally I will be more confident in a group where initial status of the students does not bear a psychological barrier to obtaining knowledge. As educator I have to pay special attention to the economic tendencies in the country and in the entire world and provide training with the perspective for the future development and growth. Workers who are not highly skilled or unemployed have to be approached with particular attention as they are a big part of the society, successful education of which will affect the entire nation. As Nordic system proves, educators must teach with respect to country’s requirements and also individual needs, as hard as it seems to accomplish such method will yield maximum positive results. Democratization of education has to be a core concept in lifelong learning process allowing students to actively participate and shape their education as they believe it will benefit them. According to Nordic approach, trade unions play an important role in forming workers’ individual and collective identity. As an adult instructor I would appreciate cooperation with trade unions to help workers shape their individual and collective identity that in turn brings up productivity levels and satisfaction. Obviously satisfied individuals are more eagerly learning and working, increasing their educational abilities and economic status. I would have to apply complex educational method based on individual and societal needs of a specific group in order to suit studen

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

Green Party refines ‘Buy Kiwi Made’ scheme

Friday, August 11, 2006

The New Zealand Government has asked the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand to start refining its taxpayer funded ‘Buy Kiwi Made‘ scheme to also include products designed in New Zealand but manufactured elsewhere.

The Buy Kiwi Made scheme was a NZ$11 million post-election deal between the Labour Party and the Green Party.

Political experts say the reason for Labour to ask the Green party to refine the scheme was because it was afraid that companies, like clothes maker Icebreaker which manufactures its clothes outside of New Zealand would not be included.

Robert Linterman, Norsewear New Zealand CEO, said “The decision to include companies which manufacture overseas undermines the credibility of the entire campaign. We were assured that the purpose of Buy Kiwi Made was to encourage the production in New Zealand, help build up our manufacturing capability and create employment. It’s hard to see how classing Icebreaker – a company which does much of its processing and manufacturing in China – as Kiwi Made will help those achieve those aims. The Buy Kiwi Made campaign should support products which are actually Kiwi made – not just Kiwi designed.”

Sue Bradford, Green MP (Member of Parliament) who is responsible for Buy Kiwi Made scheme, said she is making her proposal clearer so such companies can be associated with it and that she is confident all sides will be pleased with the final proposal. “It is good to clarify the details because there is a lot of taxpayer’s money at stake,” Bradford said.

The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions does not want the scheme to be extended to the changes. Ross Wilson, President of the Council of Trade Unions, said “It would not be in the interests of many ordinary companies and their staff. I plan to raise union concerns with government ministers.”

In no particular order, the top three acts were revealed to be two dancers known by their stage name of Twist and Pulse, gymnastic group Spelbound and Kieran Gaffney, whose act involves playing on the drum kit. After Kieran Gaffney was revealed to be in third place, Anthony McPartlin, who hosts Britain’s Got Talent with Declan Donnelly, said to Kieran: “Well done Kieran. Um, since the semi-final, we…we really had to pull out the stops to try and up the game. They’ve not known they’ve worked in the gym from six in the morning till twelve…twelve o’clock of the night. I couldn’t have asked for more. Um, it’s a team of coaches. I don’t take all the credit myself. There’s, uh, two people up there that know who they are who’ve been fantastic.”

The running order subsequently continued with 40-year-old impressionist Paul Burling, singer Christopher Stone, aged 28, Tina & Chandi, a woman and dog dancing act, Connected, a five-piece singing group, Kieran Gaffney, aged 12, 22-year-old Tobias Mead, a dancer, 80-year-old singer Janey Cutler and Spelbound in that particular order.

Earlier on in the final, Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden has stated to Spelbound: “We are hosting the 2012 Olympics and I think ‘what a brilliant opening act’.” Fellow judge Piers Morgan also commented that “[t]he purpose of this show is to identify hidden great British talent. You are that act.” After Spelbound won in the final, another judge, named Simon Cowell, stated that “the right boys and girls won on the night” and that he could “only say on live TV that that was one of the most astonishing things I have ever seen. Seriously.”
