Avoid These Three Regrets When You Build Your Screened Porch

by

Marvin Lee

If you are considering building a screened porch, take some time to think about some of the important factors that will affect your use and enjoyment. The best screened porch layouts blend these three design principles into the overall cage. Many times people don’t comprehend how crucial each element influences the total comfort and joy of their screened porch. Before you move any dirt, consider completely how each of these factors will touch your overall design. Spending a little time on this will pay big benefits down the road.

Footprint – This is perhaps the most important and incorporates the physical layout and location. There are two points to consider on this item:

* Size – Avoid the regret of not getting all space you want. Most people love their screened porch but many regret not making it bigger. A few extra square feet can make a huge difference. Adding extra space is realtively cheap when you do your project but gets very expensive if not impossible to do later. You will use your screened porch very often and will rapidly become aware that a few extra feet would allow bookshelves, additional entertainment space, or a nook for quietly reading. Supplementary area can make room for a summer kitchen or a place to put the band for your outdoor parties.

Your aim should be to get the largest porch you can afford based on how you will use it through the years. If you have small children take into account how it will be when they become larger. How will you use the space when they get older? If you don’t have kids or they are grown, a small room might be satisfactory for you.

* Location – Consider where the screened porch will be in regard to to the sun at specific parts of the day when you will want to use it. In Central Florida, we get a lot of sunshine so if you have the chance to locate it under shade, this will help keep your patio cooler. Most of the time, Southern and Western facing windows get the most sun. If you can’t do that, you can use window treatments such as shades, shutters, and blinds to help cut the heat from the sun. Also, think over the view that you will have once you complete the addition. You will most likely want to lay out your screened porch for more privacy so think of which areas will do that best.

Another influential component in location is traffic flow. If you are planning to use your screened porch for entertaining then you might want to locate it off of the kitchen. You might desire to augment the play area for the children so something with access off of the living room might be more appropriate. Access from the bedroom might be important if you are considering leaving your doors and windows open on a nice night. It is complicated to add access subsequent and crucial to think of all the present and future uses for your patio.

* Amenities – There are so many possibilities now available that you can augment to your screened porch. Outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, wet bars, fans, special lighting and built in shelving are just some possibilities. Selecting what you want early and adding these features at the time of construction will be much cheaper and quicker than including subsequent. If you are thinking about using your outside area as ‘spill over space’ meaning that guests will use both spaces during a get together then you might choose to think over adding some of these conveniences. You may also want to consider adding electrial outlets either in the floor or nearby if you desire to use the room for a workout area and need to plug in a TV or treadmill.

* Maintenance – A well constructed screened porch in most cases does not need much maintenance but you should make sure that you are using good quality material for construction. Ensure that you are getting good screen and aluminum that will ride out the elements. In Central Florida you will want to make sure that your structure will resist the winds and storms we commonly get. Confer with the contractor you are working with or your product supplier to establish you are getting a product that will last. Be sure to build suitably to circumvent water damage – a screen porch’s adversary. Building in things like venting the trim, pitching the floor slightly, flashing ledgers, and protecting posts are all extremely important and will help make your screened porch space last a long time.

The added time you take to accurately design your screened porch investment will pay large rewards later in years of enjoyment and greater value to your home. We have beautiful weather in Orlando and screened porches can be a wonderful addition to make the most of it. Carefully consider all aspects of screened porch designs before you build or talk to a contractor. Contractors specializing in enclosed porches can also help you choose the best value for your dollar. Take the time to analyze all of your options – then build knowing you will have the best of screened porch designs.

Protests continue at Baxter detention centre

Saturday, March 26, 2005

File:BaxterProtesters.jpg

Three and maybe four protesters were arrested as demonstrations entered their second day at the Baxter detention centre in the South Australian desert. The protesters were arrested trying to get closer to the faculty. Along with hundreds of other protesters, they marched to the back of the centre but were met by police in riot gear as well as mounted police.

Two activists from Brisbane were arrested in the action, while a third person, who wished not to be identified, was also arrested. Protesters report that a fourth person appears to be missing.

An estimated 400 protesters have been camping around four kilometres from the centre over the Easter weekend, to highlight the Australian Government‘s policy of mandatory detention. Police have been using helicopters to watch the protesters as they have marched from their campsite to the centre.

More than 200 police charged at protesters as they marched toward the centre. The protesters had formed a tight group and were slowly marching towards the centre. One protester received a minor arm injury during the clash.

“I think it was quite over the top,” said protester Mark Goudkamp. “I mean it was pretty clear [by] the way that we were marching in very slowly, very packed as a united group that we didn’t pose any threat to the security of the centre on the inside.”

“Everyone was banded together and people at the front knocked down the fences and we moved forces past the barrier and down to the detention centre,” said Kate, a protester from Brisbane.

“We pushed forward and got quite a fair way into the space. The cops rode horses to try to ward us off and generally tried to intimidate us. I was scared, but I felt safe within the group,” she said.

Police have said that they will charge several protesters over damage estimated at several hundred Australian dollars caused during last night’s demonstration. The damage is mainly political graffiti and minor damage to a wooden fence just outside the detention centre. One protester said that despite the threat of prosecution he would continue such actions. “I don’t want trouble but… we have nothing but our hands,” he said.

“With our hands and with our voices we are going to free the refugees. If the property is being used unjustly, as it is in this case, I think it is the right of every right-thinking person to damage that property to free those held unjustly as the refugees are in Baxter.”

However Mark Goudkamp said that this was a minority view. “[The property damage] was a very, very small incident amongst everything else that happened. Of course [police] are going to try to focus in on that to portray it in whatever negative light they can to try to justify their over-the-top presence here,” he said.

Which Is the Better-Value Treadmill: Sole F80 Or Smooth 6.45?

by

Travis Van Slooten

When comparing the Smooth 6.45 and the Sole F80, there are more similarities to be found than differences. Each of these treadmill models are so similar that anyone who is considering one of these for purchase, will definitely have a tough decision to make.

Let’s Get To The Specs

The treadmills have the relatively the same basic facilities: speeds of up to 11 miles per hour, up to 15% incline level and 3.0 HP motors with continuous duty facility.

The Sole F80 is lighter, weighing in at 250 pounds, while the Smooth 6.45 weighs 265 pounds. Despite the small weight difference, stability is guaranteed from both machines even with a 350-pound runner using them. The Smooth model though. has a larger running area offering 20 by 60 inches, while the Sole model is restricted to an area of 20 by 55 inches.

Easy To Use Controls And Programming

Both machines have LED consoles useful for displaying the user’s important data which includes the time elapsed, speed, and the total distance covered. You also get the convenience of added programs that are either preset ot customized to fit your workout needs.

The Sole F80 comes with 6 standard programs and 2 heart rate programs, plus another 2 programs which can be customized by the user himself. The 6.45 is equipped with 8 challenging preset programs and 3 user-defined programs. Both machines have hand pulse grips but the F80 model comes with a wireless chest strap for easier monitoring of your heart rate.

Additional Features

Do you want to enjoy the latest hits along with your jogging? Then you have the option of enjoying both workout and entertainment as Sole has built-in speakers where you can easily plug the MP3 player or your ipod and enjoy music while doing your exercise. The Smooth 6.45 model does not have this facility but the sister model, the Smooth 6.45M, is already equipped with the speaker facility but costs a hundred dollars more.

Coming with extra points for convenience is the Sole F80. This model lets users adjust speed and incline easily with the accessible arm rest controls. This allows for changes to be made for a better workout or allow for interval training without having to stop and adjust.

Better Warranty And Price

Both of these top treadmill exercise models are higher priced than most. They range in MSRP from $1999 up to $2297. However, they can be found on sale for only $1499. The lifetime warranty on motor and frame, 5-year warranty on all electronic parts, and 2-year guarantee on labor is applicable for both treadmills, and this makes each a great investment in exercise equipment.

Sole F80 vs Smooth 6.45 – Getting the best one

Both the sole and the smooth treadmills have the capacity to keep up with your daily workout. However, if you would have me make the choice for the best, I’d go for the Smooth 6.45. Though Sole has some additional features that are absent in the 6.45, I would still prefer the larger running area of the Smooth model. Besides, Smooth 6.45 is really one of Smooth Fitness’ best treadmills.Compare Treadmills

British Gas announces a hike in energy bills of 14.2%

Saturday, September 10, 2005

One of Britain‘s largest domestic energy suppliers, British Gas, has announced that it is to raise the price of its gas and electricity prices by a record 14.2%. It blames the price rise on increasing wholesale gas prices, which have gone up by over 50% in the past year, the rising cost of oil & the increasing difficulty in getting gas from the North Sea, a major gas field for the United Kingdom.

250 000 people on low incomes will receive a one-off GBP 60 (USD 110.35 , EUR 88.93) rebate to alleviate this price rise.

This follows increases from other suppliers including Powergen and EDF Energy, with both having risen their prices by 7 to 12%. Energywatch, Britain’s consumer energy watchdog has said domestic gas and electric bills have gone up by 17 and 22% on average respectively in the last 18 months to August.

In 2004, British Gas increased its prices by 5.9% in January and 12.4% in September.

Across the water in Ireland, the Irish government approved a 25% increase on gas prices by the state owned monopoly, Bord Gais.

Apple introduces new iPod with video playback capabilities

Thursday, October 13, 2005

On Wednesday, Apple introduced an iPod capable of displaying video, as well as a new video section to the iTunes music store. Apple CEO Steve Jobs believes that this may have a large impact on the film industry, in a similar fashion to that of the impact on the music industry when the iPod first was released.

The new iPod comes in a 30GB edition and a 60GB edition for US$299 and US$399, respectively. On the 30GB iPod, 75 hours of video at a resolution of 320×240 can be stored, and on the 60GB iPod, 150 hours can be stored. Despite these features, people claim that the screen may be too small for people to enjoy. However, iPod owners will be able to purchase an optional S-Video cable for playing video from their iPod on a television.

To help complement the new video section, Apple and ABC have agreed to a deal in which episodes of television programs such as Lost and Desperate Housewives will be available the day after airing for $1.99 per episode. Other plans for the video section involve the animation company Pixar, which was founded by current Apple CEO Steve Jobs. There are also plans to distribute content from Disney, Pixar’s distributor and owner of ABC. In addition, music videos will also be available at the on-line music store for $1.99 each.

The video iPod was announced along with a new model of its iMac G5, which features a remote control that allows the iMac to act as a home media center as well as a normal personal computer. To control media center capabilities, the new iMac is sold with a program called Front Row. Some customers have complained however that this iMac is missing functionality out-of-the-box that allows a user to watch TV on it.

The new iMac also has an Apple iSight digital camera built-in as well as a thinner design than its predecessor.

Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out

Monday, February 12, 2007

Cars drove home the big prize last night, from the 34th Annual Annie Awards. The animation industry’s highest honor, ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annies recognise contributions to animation, writing, directing, storyboarding, voice acting, composing, and much more.

As mentioned, Pixar took home the big prize last night, after facing stiff competition from four other Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.

But the biggest winner of the night didn’t get a “Best Animated Feature” nod at all. Flushed Away won five feature animation categories including Animated Effects (Scott Cegielski), Character Animation (Gabe Hordos), Production Design (Pierre-Olivier Vincent), Voice Acting (Sir Ian McKellan as Toad), Writing (Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan, and Will Davies).

Over The Hedge won awards for Directing (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Storyboarding (Gary Graham), and Character Design (Nicolas Marlet).

Of little surprise, Randy Newman won an Annie for Cars in the “Music in an Animated Feature Production” category. Newman has won many Oscars for his movie music, and has a nomination this year for the song “Our Town“. Newman didn’t attend the Annies, instead picking up a Grammy for “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”.

DisneyToon Studios’ Bambi II won “Best Home Entertainment Production”, while “Best Animated Short Subject” went to Blue Sky Studios’ No Time For Nuts, which is based on Ice Age.

“Best Animated Video Game” went to Flushed Away The Game, while a United Airlines ad named “Dragon” won a “Best Animated Television Commercial” Annie for DUCK Studios.
